After Sony tantalised the GamesCom crowd with talk of 'Minis' coming to the PSP (bite-sized downloadable games at trouser-friendly prices) Gamasutra took the opportunity to quiz PlayStation Network operations director Eric Lempel on its similarity to the iPhone business model.

"We wanted to get into this area to have developers... creating low-priced, bite-sized games you could download quickly and play. It's not open to users; these are professional developers, it's not like what you're seeing on that other platform," he explains.

Despite asserting that the public aren't being invited to the PSP developers party, Lempel did offer a glimmer of hope to the homebrew community.

"We're really only focusing on today with this, and that's not part of the plan," he said, enticingly adding "we never say never for anything."

Minis could easily be the make or break for the PSP's second life, especially if software and applications are also made available alongside the games, and it's here that the homebrew programmer could make a valuable contribution to the console's exciting new digital persona.

Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
