GDC '09: Iwata sings Miyamoto's praises during GDC keynote

Saturo Iwata’s currently giving his Nintendo keynote at GDC, and he spent several minutes of the early part of it talking about how brilliant Shigeru Miyamoto is. Apparently, his way is an ‘upward spiral’, directly creditable for Nintendo’s successes.

He’s also a perfectionist, and Nintendo is happy to delay the release of games until they meet his exacting standards.

How does he manage to be so brilliant? He observes other human beings, and himself. His output can be mapped to his real life interests. When he took up gardening he created Pikmin. When he got a new puppy: Nintendogs.

It’s not all roses and cream, though. When inclined, Miyamoto has been known to knock tables over and perpetrate kidnap.

I know. It’s okay, though: the upsetting of the table is metaphorical, relating to his perfectionist habit of resetting projects in the late stages if they aren't up to snuff, and the kidnapping allegation simply refers to the fact that he enlists members of staff to play games for him.

Some kidnapper.
