A little less than two weeks before Americans pay their taxes, Nintendo will release the third iteration of its best-selling handheld. April 5 marks the official first day the Nintendo DSi will be sold in the United States. Two colors are being made available at launch: blue and black (pictured).

A cross between a gaming handheld and PDA, Nintendo DSi comes equipped with two cameras, an SD card slot, and ability to connect to an online store for downloading games and other applications.

Two software programs come embedded on the handheld for use with the two cameras and microphone. The first allows play with the two cameras using 10 different lenses and effects with which to manipulate photos. The second, entitled DSi Sound, lets you record sounds and music for playback.

Although the DSi departs slightly from Nintendo's game-only philosophy, Nintendo of America’s VP Sales & Marketing Cammie Dunaway is confident about the system's prospects.

"Nintendo DSi builds on Nintendo’s commitment to bringing fun and creative entertainment to everyone, and will allow consumers to personalize and share their very own experiences."
