Townsmen is probably one of the most successful mobile gaming franchises we've ever seen, with the fifth instalment recently coming out as Pocket Gamer's highest rated game of Spring 2008 - a placement calculated from review scores of five different sites, and not just us.

So naturally we're eager for any new Townsmen news, and Glu just got in touch to tell us it's lined up to publish HandyGames's next instalment.

"The Townsmen series continues to grow in popularity," says Glu's Frank Keeling. "We're delighted to be adding this latest game to our publishing roster, and look forward to a close working relationship with the team at HandyGames."

Townsmen 6 will place you in the role of a freedom fighter during the French Revolution, with a host of new buildings and strategy gaming features. The new game will also benefit from improved graphics, an isometric perspective, special effects, a new mini-game, and a new control scheme to make it even more accessible.

Where available, this new control system will take advantage of modern handset hardware features, such as accelerometers and touchscreens.

"This partnership combines high quality Made in Germany production and the international sales power of Glu Mobile," comments Christopher Kassulke, CEO of HandyGames.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
