Atari’s new release schedule is PSP free

It’s a great line-up, unless Santa’s bringing you a Sony handheld

We took a look at Atari’s global showcase last week, and the distinct lack of PSP announcements from one of the big players in the video game industry is what really caught our eye. Obviously there are some game announcements that have pushed us toward the edges of our pocket gaming seats (who ya gonna call?), but it’s hard not to focus on the publisher's lack of PSP content.

Anyway, the new Atari release schedule just crossed our computer screens, and although Atari is dabbling in all the current generation of consoles, it does indeed confirm that the PSP is being left out in the cold – even on the franchises that are being pushed across the gaming board, like Ghostbusters. The DS version has a release date of June 2009, alongside the rest of the consoles, which we’re definitely looking forward to after the excellent mobile version and all the controversy around the game’s troubled life.

There was a brief glimmer of ghost busting PSP hope back in April, when developer Terminal Reality intimated that Venkman and team might make it to Sony's handheld in one form or another, but Atari's release schedule has sadly put those notions to pasture.

Before then, in February, we should be seeing The Times Crossword Challenge and The Chase: Felix Meets Felicity, which we’ve already seen a trailer for. No mention of a handheld version of Riddick, which we speculated about back in October, and considering the console versions are due out in March, Vin Diesel’s polished eyeballs presumably aren’t going mobile after all. Shame.

And that’s about it for handheld gaming. The DS is represented, but games for Nintendo’s mini-console seem to be a tad thin on the ground, too. Whether we can expect any announcements in between about Atari’s interest in downloadable content, we’ll just have to wait and see, but it seems the games giant is concentrating on sofa-based gaming next year, rather than gaming on the go.

Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
