DSi gets its first working flash cart

Nintendo's piracy-free grace period seems to be over

DSi gets its first working flash cart

We reported on the DSi's ability to prevent current DS flash carts from working when the console first showed up, but it seems Acekard took this as something of a challenge. And after only two months of piracy-free gaming, the DSi's security methods have been circumvented and the first working flash cart (the Acekard 2i) is now available.

The flash cart supports SDHC cards, making for some pretty impressive storage space, and even looks as though it can access the DSi's built-in SD slot.

Clearly these memory carts will be used for piracy (as you can see by the Castlevania game running in the Acekart video below), but they're not all evil - flash carts add a great deal of functionality to a DS(i) that Nintendo isn't too keen on providing since there's no money in it. Functions like MP3 players, movie players, emulators and home brew games and utilities.

To be honest, if hardware manufacturers weren't so cut-throat and egotistical when it comes to controlling what people can and can't do with their own property (we're looking at you as well, Sony and Apple) and allowed the system to perform some of these functions out of the box, there'd be no need for flash carts.

As it is, the Acekard 2i is likely to gather a fair bit of interest from DSi users who like to make the most of their consoles.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
