Phantasy Star Portable might have sold over 217,000 copies on the first day of its release in Japan last week, but surprisingly that doesn't seem to have had much of an effect of the week's console sales.

The latest figures show PSP is still topping the Japanese hardware charts - of course. But sales are down some 6000 units on last week, putting PSP and DS sales closer than they've been for some time.

The exact figures sold for the week ending August 3rd are: PSP - 61,181, DS - 57,398. That puts the two handhelds at the number one and two slots respectively, with Wii the closest competitor having sold 41,109 consoles.

You've got to admit, the figures are getting close. DS has had some pretty big releases of its own in Japan over the last couple of weeks with Dragon Quest V and Rhythm Tengoku Gold, and the console is still selling consistently well there. Will PSP be able to hang on over the coming weeks? Watch this space to find out.
