Nintendo today reported record high financial performance for the year ending March 31st 2007, with staggering revenues of ¥966.5b (£4b) and operating profits of ¥226b (£948m).

Of significance to us pocket gamers, however, is the fact that the company is attributing this result largely to the full-year sales of more than 23 million DS systems and 123 million DS games.

These latest figures mean that, since its release, the DS has now broken through the 40 million unit barrier.

And the impressive momentum of Nintendo's loveable handheld isn't about to slow down. Over the next 12 months, a further 22 million systems and 130 million DS carts are expected to be sold.

That's a lot of happy consumers, but just as thrilling is the fact that it's the kind of performance that would further support analysts' theories that handheld consoles are on course to surpass their home-bound cousins by the end of the decade. Hurrah!
