Considering one of the most famous games ever, Lemmings, involved moving not very intelligent creatures around bizarre puzzle-based levels, the idea of a herding game on the DS would certainly seem to have plenty of potential.

After all, an official Lemmings won't be coming to DS any time soon, since Sony owns the brand (although there's a DS homebrew version) nor has Sega announced a DS version of its cool cat-versus-mouse herding / puzzle game Chu Chu Rocket (surely that one is only a matter of time...)

Enter Alten8's sheep-based game, Cool Herders. It will be the UK gamemaker's first DS title, and is based on the game of the same name which was released a couple of years ago for Sega's Dreamcast console.

Original developer Harmless Lion has come onboard to help port the title to the DS, and while the core level-based 'collect and lead your sheep to safety' gameplay will remain, Alten8 is promising plenty of new features. For example, you'll be able to choose different herders. Each has special skills, while dangers include predators such as Hades the wolf.

Ideally we'd expect some neat stylus-touchscreen control as well as innovative use of the microphone – how about a bonus sheepdog level?

Less spectulative will be the four-player multiplayer mode, where as well as leading your own sheep, you can steal those of your competitors.
