iOS App Store browsers the world over are experiencing excitement followed by disappointment followed by guarded interest as they spot EA's Alice: Madness Returns on the App Store, realise it's not a game but a prequel storybook, and then decide it looks quite good anyway, particularly since it's free.

Available for iPhone and iPad, Alice: Madness Returns is an interactive storybook that explains what happens to Alice at Rutledge Asylum between the events of American McGee's first Alice game and the sequel, which is coming to Xbox 360 and PS3 this June.

The story was "crafted" by McGee himself, features art from the Madness Returns team, includes Twitter and Facebook integration, and lets you imitate the Cheshire Cat by grinning into the lens of your iPhone 4, fourth-generation iPod touch, or iPad 2 camera.

It's available now for free.

Tucked into the App Store description, meanwhile, is the news that EA's popular iOS shooter Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is "COMING SOON" to iPad.

The iPhone original attained a highly respectable Pocket Gamer Bronze Award.
