Get a glimpse behind the scenes

Age of Empires Mobile's development process showcased at Gamescom
  • Age of Empires Mobile, the upcoming RTS spin-off, received a showcase at Gamescom
  • Revealed at Opening Night Live, it goes into the background of the game and its design
  • It offers a greater idea of what we can expect when the game releases

Well, if you thought we were over with Gamescom news this week, you're dead wrong. Because aside from everything we covered yesterday, there's still a whole lot more to dig through. And this time it's the upcoming mobile spin-off of the iconic RTS franchise, Age of Empires Mobile.

The showcase, which you can view below, digs deep into the design philosophies behind the game's factions and offers more details about the gameplay, including the reveal of aspects like single-player dungeons and the inclusion of both PvP and PvE. It's only a brief watch, but probably the best glimpse we've had outside of earlier test phases.

Personally speaking though, if you're a dyed-in-the-wool Age of Empires or RTS fan, this is probably not going to light your world on fire. From the emphasis on pre-battle strategy to the dreaded timers and overworld resource-gathering, it looks as if Age of Empires Mobile is going to be a major departure from the series.

I admit, I was definitely sceptical about AoE Mobile. There's something imperceptible in Age of Empires that really relies on it being a one-time-buy kind of game, and it'd need to be massively altered to fit into the modern live-service strategy for mobile games.

For better or worse, it seems to be leaning more into the latter, which isn't exactly a massive loss given that the Age of Empire games only recently had a new entry with IV, and remasters of all the previous games.

Still, if you were hoping for a new, exciting take, then this might not be for you. But for mobile RTS fans, there might be something there to enjoy. Or you could always check out our list of the top five mobile games like Age of Empires for our personal alternatives.
