iPhone MMO based on Watchmen in development

Probably because of the iPhone’s inherent connectivity, the MMO is rapidly becoming something of the system’s Holy Grail genre. While there have been some superb advances in connecting thousands of players to the same gameworld, none have really captured the experience of the PC’s persistent worlds.

But a new project from Warner Bros looks set to change all that. Developed by iPhone studio Last Legion, an MMO focused on the movie/comic adaptation of the Watchmen promises a full 3D game in which thousands of players will congregate in a persistent representation of New York City of 1975.

Watchmen: Justice is Coming uses a new technology developed by Last Legion, called ‘cloudMMO’, which makes it possible for Apple’s platform to support the grand scope of such a massively online multiplayer.

Players will be able to create their own superhero characters and evolve them through five different districts in the crime-filled cityscape.

Warner Bros is apparently gearing up to launch this Watchmen MMO around the same time as the big screen adaptation hits the box office, so we should be seeing it on the App Store this month.
