Doinksoft’s upcoming rogue-lite ‘Tombshaft’ is now available for pre-order over on the App Store. It’s a charming and often challenging auto-scrolling platformer that sees you delving into the deepest depths of a trap-filled tomb in search of hidden relics and treasure.

At first glance, it might remind you of classic roguelikes like Spelunky, but doinksoft – the team behind the popular Gato Roboto – have clearly worked hard to give it its own unique identity.

Interestingly, despite some drawing comparisons between Tombshaft and specifically Downwell, developer Britt Brady pointed out that it actually started life as a riff on NS-Shaft, a fairly obscure title from Japanese studio NAGI-P Soft.

You’ll find yourself clinging to walls for dear life as you’re forced forever onwards (or downwards) by the crumbling structures around you. And you won’t be alone down there, no sir, as the tomb is also home to various creatures of the night – bats, horned devils, and of course a few floating eyeballs.

Sure, the monsters will give you a hard time, but it’s the traps strewn around the place that are likely to kill your run. These can be dodged quickly and efficiently thanks to the game’s fluid controls, though this still doesn’t seem like a game for the faint of heart.

As you continue to explore deeper into the procedurally generated caves, you’ll find coins that can be used to purchase new characters, all with their own unique look. This’ll hopefully help to keep repeat runs feeling fresh.

I really like the look of this one, and I’ve heard good think about Gato Roboto, so I’ll be checking it out at launch on August 22nd. You can pre-order Tombshaft now over on the App Store, and I hear an Android port is set to follow the iOS release.
