Suikoden Star Leap gives us a new look at the battle system in latest trailer
  • Suikoden Star Leap has received a brand-new trailer
  • Check out the battle system and how it functions
  • Strategic party battles are joined by mass-battle encounters you can participate in

Suikoden Star Leap, the upcoming mobile spin-off of the hit Konami RPG series, has unveiled a brand-new look at its battle system. Naturally, in any JRPG, one of the distinguishing factors is whether you stick to the orthodox approach or put your own twist on it. And it seems Star Leap is going for the former with a dash of the latter.

As the trailer demonstrates, many of these mechanics will be familiar to JRPG players. You take turns deciding on your character's actions, picking between standard attacks, runes (magical abilities) and Secret Techniques activated after a gauge is filled.

But there are plenty of wrinkles and twists in this simple setup. The initiative system, for example, allows you to line up your heroes to deliver devastating consecutive attacks. Meanwhile, focusing on exploiting an enemy's weakness can leave them unbalanced and vulnerable to further attacks.

Suikoden also offers even more of the series' signature strategic action. While it may not please purists of the strategy genre, you'll be able to go from simple party vs party battles and into full-scale warfare between different units. Your party members can have a profound effect on the outcome of the battles, and you'll have a chance to change up manoeuvres as you go.

Suikoden looks set to offer a pretty faithful iteration of the classic series on mobile. While I reckon it's fair to reserve judgement, the graphics, style and gameplay all look very promising. So keep an eye out for Suikoden Star Leap, and check in for news with us as it comes in!
