Over time, the iPad has built up a good collection of on-device multiplayer games - everything from boardgames such as Scrabble, Small World and Blokus to quirky indie experiments such as Omium.

Splash Duel HD is more the latter than the former, but as a reimagining of Breakout meet Pong, it mixes up tradition and novelty.

Splashing around

Developed by French Studio Little Worlds, it comes in one and two player options, and there are 100 different levels to play through.

The theme is aquatic, with power ups taking the forms of fish, which you release by breaking the glass blocks that contain them with your balls. They provide options such as missiles, power balls, multi-balls, big racket and defensive wall.

You can post your successes including the bronze, silver and gold medals awarded for each level to Facebook.

Splash Duel HD is available now, priced $2.99, €2.39 or £1.79.

You can see how it plays in the following video.
