Web-sling your way around apocalyptic New York

E3 2008: Spider-Man: Web of Shadows announced for DS and PSP

Activision has announced new Spider-Man game Spider-Man: Web of Shadows will be released on DS and PSP - as well as all the home console formats - this autumn.

No big surprise there seeing as Activision has been quite liberally using the licence to release one new game after another since it got it, but this new game at least puts a bit of a twist on the usual web-slinging about rescuing people trapped under rubble.

Instead, Web of Shadows takes place in an apocalyptic New York City and players have ultimate control over the city's salvation and Spider-Man's destiny. For the first time, the game's direction and outcome will be entirely decided on the route you take through it.

Playing as Spidey, you'll be able to switch between his red suit and black one, with the red offering grace and agility and the black one good old brute force. You'll also be able to decide whether to team up with Marvel's time-honoured heroes or its most dangerous villains then upgrade their abilities as you go.

It's not clear exactly how the handheld games will differ from the home console ones, but other features mentioned include an upgraded combat system and increased city interactivity and destructibility. No doubt we'll find out more nearer to the game's release this autumn.
