Project Needlemouse to grace the App Store

Sonic The Hedgehog 4 rumoured for iPhone this July

Sega has just revealed that Project Needlemouse is Sonic The Hedgehog 4, a direct sequel to 1994's Sonic The Hedgehog 3. It's going to be a 2D platformer, available this year for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, and – gasp - a mystery console.

This fourth platform is iPhone, according to SonicStadium, who came by the information by tweaking a URL on the Sonic 4 website to reveal the image below.

It's not a great picture, and could well be a fake, but there's absolutely no reason to suppose that the fourth platform isn't iPhone. After all, if it were DS or PSP Sega would have scant reason to keep this information secret.

Why it would keep iPhone a secret is also unclear, since Sonic has already appeared on that platform – albeit it only briefly in the case of Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games, which was abruptly yanked from the App Store last night.

Wild speculation welcome.
