Sega drops official word and pushes back the release date

Confirmed: Sonic The Hedgehog 4 for iPhone

Sega has confirmed what we've suspected for months now: Sonic The Hedgehog 4 is coming to iPhone and iPod touch.

The Japanese publisher made the announcement in tandem with news that the game won't be available until late this year. Originally, the release had been set for this summer.

According to a statement from the company, "With this dedication to quality and the Sonic experience in mind, Sega has decided to extend the development of the game."

A specific release date has not been provided, though pre-holiday season release in September/October seems likely.

The game will be released as a series of episodes on console, which implies that the iPhone version will also be sold in individual episodes. Whether the price of the iPhone version differs from its console counterparts, though, remains to be seen.

Additionally, the virtual control scheme should be a point of interest given the lacklustre controls of Genesis ports of the first two Sonic The Hedgehog games.

Sonic The Hedgehog 4 will be available for iPhone and iPod touch later this year at an undisclosed price.
