UPDATE: Seems the game sneaked its way onto the European Virtual Console while we weren't looking, and is available now. Original article follows:

The latest Game Gear title to make the journey onto the 3DS's Virtual Console is isometric puzzler Sonic Labyrinth, set to arrive on the Japanese eShop tomorrow.

Swapping high-speed 2D thrills for surprisingly sedate brainteasers, this infamous '90s release finds Sonic trying to escape a series of four mazes by solving problems and collecting keys.

Oddly for a Sonic game, the Blue Blur is unable to make use of his trademark acceleration in Sonic Labyrinth, as the evil Dr Robotnik has pinched his speed shoes.

Though the game will only be available from the Japanese eShop initially, we'd be surprised if Sonic Labyrinth doesn't follow its Virtual Console cousin Sonic The Hedgehog: Triple Trouble over to Western territories at a future date.

Japanese 3DS owners can download Sonic Labyrinth from May 16th for ¥300.
