With iPhone apps such as Ocarina, Leaf Trombone and most recently I Am T-Pain, developer Smule (Sonic Mule) has been successfully pushing the power of App Store music for a while.

And it looks like it will be doing so for a while longer if the news from VentureBeat is anything to go by.

It's reporting the company has raised $8 million in its third round of venture funding.

The cash comes from new investor Shasta Ventures, as well as existing investors Bessemer Venture Partners and Granite Ventures. Smule has so far raised a total $13.7 million.

Apparently Ocarina has been downloaded 1.7 million times, while to-date I Am T-Pain has done 700,000 paid downloads.

In addition, VentureBeat claims the company, which boasts an impressive amount of academic brain power, including CTO and CCO Dr Ge Wang, assistant professor at Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, will have a turnover of around $3 million this year.
