[UPDATE] Arcade-shooter Skylanders: Cloud Patrol blasts onto iOS in Canada
UPDATE: Seems I got my App Stores muddled up. Skylanders: Cloud Patrol is actually a Canadian release, rather than a New Zealand one, so a date for the US and UK App Stores is uncertain at this time. Edited article follows:

Skylanders has certainly been making waves over in the world of consoles, with its combination of highly collectible (read: often out of stock) toys and child-friendly action / RPG-esque gameplay proving to be rather successful.

Now, the immensely popular series is getting its first outing on iOS in the form of Skylanders: Cloud Patrol, out on the Canadian App Store as a Universal app for both iPhone and iPad.

As you might expect, the gameplay has been altered to accommodate touchscreen controls.

So, instead of the usual battling and coin hunting, you'll be putting your collected critters to the test by blasting goblins with your finger.

What's rather interesting about the whole thing is that any toy you've bought and put into the main game can be unlocked instantly in this portable version via its "web code card".

That's either a great thing if you're one of the millions of children enraptured by the series, or a very bad thing if you're one of the millions of parents being pestered for a Metallic Edition Cyndar (currently selling for a few hundred pounds on eBay, if you want to know).

The game comes with leaderboard support via Game Center, magical boost items to help your score, and - in a surprise twist given the current climate - no in-app purchases.

Skylanders: Cloud Patrol is currently out on the Canadian App Store for 99c, which means US and UK gamers will have to wait a little while before it appears on their shores.

We'll keep you posted when and if it does appear.
