Following its US launch last month, the Finnish-developed location-based MMORPG Shadow Cities - a Pocket Gamer Silver award winner - is now live across western Europe.

New countries included are the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark and Norway.

Spellbinding

The game is a location-based and augmented reality experience that splits players into one of two competing teams - the Animators and the Architects.

As a mage, you spend much your time fighting and capturing wandering spirits to build up your experience, which you do using gesture-based spells.

The game's energy - called mana - is another key element that enables you to complete actions. You get a certain amount of mana regularly over time, or can buy it using real cash.

In your neighbourhood

The location-based elements occurs as you vie to control different areas of the map and their energy gateways by placing dominators. The team with the most dominators on each gateway control it, and collect its energy. You can attack (and heal) dominators too.

Although most people play in their realworld location, you also can teleport to new areas to help your team win the weekly campaigns, which are played out globally.

Shadow Cities is a free-to-play game for iPhone, although it also supports iPod touch and iPad.

You can get some idea how it plays in the following video.
