What could be better than football/soccer - a simple, beautiful game in which 22 men run around in a freshly mown field kicking a ball until something exciting happens?

If you’re playing by video game rules the simple answer is, of course, zombies.

It seems that Chillingo has taken note of this strong demand for our living-dead cousins for its latest iPhone title, Pro Zombie Soccer, which manages to combine elements of the beautiful game with the threat of brain-eating monsters.

Naturally, zombies don’t tend to play by the rules (unless the rules are simply ‘eat victim’s brain, move on to next victim’), so those expecting to be fielding a strong starting 11 against an undead all-stars team can look away now.

Instead, Pro Zombie Soccer takes a more decisive approach, letting the player use the ball, orbital weapons platforms and death rays to splatter the pesky cerebal-chompers, all linked together with some excellent looking comic-book style cutaways.

It’s from a new development studio set up by some of the makers of Plants vs Zombies called Super Awesome Hyper-dimensional Mega Team, so surreal humour, striking visuals, and comedy zombies are the order of play.

The game is available on the App Store now at an introduction price of 59p/99c in honour of some football competition that’s taking place in South Africa.
