Pompom the Great Space Rescue, a brand new 2D platformer with a unique twist, launches for iOS and Android

After opening pre-registrations in January, the unique spin on your typical platformer Pompom the Great Space Rescue has officially launched. Developed by Tomo Camp and PID Games, this tribute to the SNES era of gaming sees you take on the role of Pompom, a hamster who can only move forward and jump. Rather than controlling the character, your goal is to control the platformers in his path instead.

Pompom is first and foremost a callback to games like the old Sonic the Hedgehog entries or even classic Mario titles, and it wears this inspiration on its sleeve. The graphics have a 16-bit charm to them, with a pixelated art style that is sure to transport you back to the days of yore. Combine this with the music, which is chiptunes and very similar to the types of soundtracks you’d hear from those games, and is one heck of a nostalgic trip.

Gameplay-wise, Pompom takes those traditional 2D platformers and spins the concept on its head, as rather than jumping, dodging, attacking, or whatever else yourself, you instead will be controlling the stage itself.

Scattered throughout each level are a few base pieces of the stage, but the rest is entirely up to you to place bit by bit. That’s right, you’ll basically be creating the stages yourself, setting up paths for your adorable little hamster protagonist to hop to and from.

This makes the game quite special and is a concept that is rarely seen in the likes of the genre. Still, if you enjoy the 2D platformer style of gameplay, you’re almost guaranteed to love Pompom the Great Space Rescue.

Don’t take my word for it! You can take the game for a spin for the low price of absolutely free at either of the links below this article and try it yourself!
