Almost three years since its release, Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War is still surprising players with new content. Joycity’s base-building naval warfare game honours the Pirates of the Caribbean cinematic universe, drawing from its lore throughout. Many of the most famous captains can be unlocked along with their vessels, and play a central part in the high jinks on the high seas.

1
Jack Sparrow - Captain of the Black Pearl

No Pirates of the Caribbean game would be complete without the swaggering, rum-swigging rogue Jack Sparrow, “the original — the only!” In Tides of War, he is bound to the infamous Black Pearl ship. Unlock him by completing ‘Jack’s Memory: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ during Shansa’s Cave, Chapter 1. It’ll be “the day you’ll always remember as the day you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow” — then did.

2
Hector Barbossa - Captain of the Queen Anne’s Revenge

Hector Barbossa debuted in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film as Jack Sparrow’s cursed antagonist. Time’s a healer, however – as is the goddess Calypso – and Barbossa pops up throughout the series as Sparrow’s collaborator. In Tides of War, he is available to captain the Queen Anne’s Revenge. Add him to your pirate army by completing ‘Barbossa’s Memory: Journey of Revenge’ during Shansa’s Cave, Chapter 3.

3
Davy Jones - Captain of the Flying Dutchman

The Pirates of the Caribbean series is as much loved for its villains as its heroes. Davy Jones appears in Dead Man’s Chest in all his tentacular glory, keen to collect on the Faustian pact Jack Sparrow made with him. In Tides of War, you can unlock the summoner of the Kraken himself to take charge of the Flying Dutchman. Complete ‘Will’s Memory: At World’s End’ during Shansa’s Cave, Chapter 2 to add him to your crew.

4
Armando Salazar - Captain of the Silent Mary

Jack’s nemesis Armando Salazar proved a formidable foe in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. In Tides of War he’s no push over either. Here he is once again in command of the ghostly Silent Mary. Unlock Señor Salazar by completing ‘Jack’s Another Memory: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ during Shansa’s Cave, Chapter 5.

5
NEW: Elizabeth Swann - Versatile tactician

Despite proclaiming that she’s “had it with wobbly-legged, rum-soaked pirates!” in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, Elizabeth Swann clearly has a taste for the pirate life – and appears in almost all the subsequent films. One of the major additions in the March Tides of War update, she can be added to your crew as a captain of common ships. Unlock Captain Swann by completing the new chapter in ‘Will’s Memory: At World’s End’ during Shansa’s Cave, Chapter 2.

6
NEW: Will Turner - Versatile tactician

Another of the franchise’s major characters, Will Turner is a blacksmith, master swashbuckler and reluctant ally to Jack Sparrow. There are just two things he wants in the world: Elizabeth Swann, and his cursed father’s freedom. The March update lets you unlock Turner to become a captain of common ships. Like Elizabeth, he can be unlocked by completing the new chapter in ‘Will’s Memory: At World’s End’ during Shansa’s Cave, Chapter 2. Add Will Turner to a fleet with his long-time beau Elizabeth Swann, and hearts will appear above the ships in a decidedly ‘Arrrr’twarming moment.

In addition to two new captains, the March update introduces the Caribbean Pass, a chance to earn unique skins, base effects and other exclusives. Enjoy all this and more by downloading the latest version of Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War, free on Android and iOS.
