At the Captivate 2010 showcase in Hawaii, Capcom revealed that upcoming DS adventure Okamiden will be released in western territories some time in 2011.

It's set after the events of PS2 and Wii adventure game Okami, and follows the continuing journey of Chibiterasu, a young sun god who is summoned to protect and restore the land.

Along the way you'll meet up with a whole cast of characters who you can partner up with to help beat up monsters and solve puzzles.

Like the console predecessor, much of Chibiterasu's powers come from a celestial brush. This giant paintbrush unleashes magic to solve puzzles and power up special attacks when certain symbols are draw on the handheld's touch screen.

Destructoid quizzed Capcom producer Motoshide Eshiro on the possibility of the game coming to another touchscreen favourite, the iPhone. Eshiro said that the DS was chosen for its wide success and hoped that the console's popularity would help "expand awareness of the Okamiden brand."

If the game is well received and lots of people are playing the game, Eshiro says, "we might get calls to start putting this on other systems."

Don't hold your breath, though. Okamiden is currently a DS exclusive and will hit Japan sometime in 2010. The game will be translated for American and European releases in 2011.
