iPhone coming to Vodafone 14th January

But what happened to competition driving prices down?

It’s official - Vodafone customers will finally be able to get in on the iPhone action from 14th January.

The network has started taking pre-orders on both iPhone 3G and 3GS models. You can risk frost bite and a Three Stooges-style pratfall in popping into a Vodafone store to register your interest, or you can take the sensible route and order online.

Prices start from free on a £35 per month two year contract for the 3G. The rather more desirable 3GS, meanwhile, will cost you £45 per month for two years if you want to avoid the initial charge.

While that works out 95p per month more expensive than the equivalent O2 offer, with identical talk time, the Vodafone deal includes unlimited texts next to O2’s piffling 500. Not that I send anything approaching 500 texts per months, but then I have no friends.

Orange offers a little more to think about, of course. Its equivalent 3GS package is about the same price as O2’s per month, offers the same talk time and text allowance, but is spread over just 18 months.

Tesco, of course, is the disruptive child who just has to be different to everyone else. The closest thing it has to these ‘free’ deals is an eye-watering £60 a month two year package, which offers unlimited texts and minutes.

So there you go. The iPhone: you takes your choices, you has no money left for food.
