A premium mobile version of the iconic board game MONOPOLY is heading to iOS and Android later this year. The announcement arrived during today’s Brand Licensing Europe event, where Hasbro confirmed that Marmalade Game Studios is behind the adaptation. If Marmalade’s name sounds familiar, that's probably because it’s the studio behind the recent CLUEDO, The Game of Life, and BATTLESHIP games.

The mobile-friendly version will feature both a classic mode and a fast mode for on-the-go play. You’ll also be able to include several customised house rules at once, meaning it’s easier than ever to play MONOPOLY the way you want to play it.

As you might expect, there’s a single-player mode as well as local multiplayer, and – according to the press release made available to us – the game ‘offers a way to beat other players all over the world and brings board game fun to everyone’. I suppose that might mean there’s an online competitive mode, but obviously the wording there is a little vague/ambiguous. I’d say the most interesting mode, for me at least, would be the pass and play mode. This allows up to 4 players to play a game of MONOPOLY on the same mobile device.

Much like Marmalade Game Studios’ earlier board game adaptations, MONOPOLY will be a premium title. That obviously doesn’t rule out the possibility of seeing DLC or expansions. This one’s set for release later this year on both the App Store and Google Play. Given the quality of the developer’s other board games, I can see this one being another solid and mobile-friendly adaptation.
