Despite containing the likes of the excellent Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, the 3DS's library of games - which now includes Super Mario 3D Land - is a little underwhelming.

So it's no surprise that - according to Mario Kart producer Hideki Konno - Nintendo saw the completion of Mario Kart 7 as an "act of emergency".

Development of Mario Kart 7 began with just eight staff, but some of those were soon assigned to work on Nintendogs + Cats.

Ninty then brought in Metroid Prime developer Retro Studios to work on the upcoming racer's 16 classic tracks, leaving the rest of the game's development to its internal team.

Mario Kart 7 is due to speed onto UK shelves on December 2nd and into the US a couple of days later. You can check out our hands-on with the game while you wait.
