Mad Monkey Studio demonstrates iPhone 3GS pixel shader technique

France-based Mad Monkey Studios is creating quite a stir, mainly due to its exclusive focus on the iPhone 3GS. A developers blog has been launched by the team, which is giving advice on building stable, fast iPhone code while demonstrating the new techniques the studio has achieved on the iPhone hardware update.

Lead programmer on the studio's first game Gaël Lequeux has been posting his top tips on how to make iPhone games perform strongly and smoothly, gleaned from the team's experience on platforms such as the PC, Dreamcast and PS2.

He's also just posted a video showing the iPhone 3GS's pixel shaders at work. While the result doesn't necessarily look all that fancy, it's actually quite a technological achievement.

A variety of 3D objects have been given a 'line-drawn' style, intended for use in Mad Monkey's first game, which is the apparently the first time that such a shader technique has been possible on a handheld platform.

Have a look at the video below, then check out Mad Monkey Studio's blog for more insight on developing for the iPhone 3GS.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
