Connect 2 Media resurrects Lumines franchise for mobile

We love Lumines. The game’s unique mixture of block dropping and beat matching still stands out from the crowd today, five years since it first launched on Japanese PSPs (and subsequently in other territories).

Strangely, though, on any device that allows you to phone your mum, Q Entertainment’s masterpiece has not managed to win our hearts quite so readily. Just look at the disappointing mobile and iPhone versions.

Now, some three years after Gameloft’s attempt at a mobile Lumines, Connect 2 Media is having another crack at the franchise. The mobile publisher is confident that it can do Q Entertainment chief Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s concept justice, too.

“With the work we did on the Guitar Hero franchise, in the last couple of years,” says C2M CEO Eric Hobson, “we established the fact that popular music games could really thrive on mobile devices. Now, with Lumines, we are set to take advantage of advances in technology and create a new benchmark in mobile music led games.”

Mizuguchi, for his part, is “very excited about working with Connect2Media on Lumines.” He believes that “they have a truly global reach, expertise and [a] record of innovation on mobile platforms that matches our philosophy at Q.”

Expect to see the fruits of this collaboration some time next year, with the company said to be “already working with major dance music labels to provide content for the games.”
