It’s been almost a month since we first saw the attractive images of Karate Champ XL, the iPad version of the C64 and arcade classic from Revolutionary Concepts.

Now the wait is finally over, as the game has broken the five neatly arranged bricks preventing access to the App Store and is available in all its retro-arcade glory

Karate Champ XL is a loving tribute to the fighters of a former age, before they all started using words like ‘EX’ and ‘Armor-breaking’, whatever the heck that means.

Instead, your costumed karate black-belt punches and kicks against an identical opponent across a series of different backgrounds, with an all-powerful judge watching on.

The iPad version features a rather snazzy looking two-player split-screen mode, along with Bluetooth and wi-fi support and arcade cabinet styling.

Karate Champ XL is available for £1.19 / $1.99 / €1.59.
