Classic four-player arcade game Gauntlet is being remade for DS, complete with online co-op modes and more.

The latest version of the much ported game will come from Eidos and is in development with Sonic Rivals 2 and Death Jr II maker Backbone Entertainment. As you'd expect, the game's main selling point is going to be four-player co-op, which will be playable locally and online, feature voice chat and allow players to explore each dungeon independently without being restricted to staying on the same screen at once.

As ever, players will be able to choose from the four classic classes of characters, each of which has their own strengths and weaknesses. The game promises 40 maps, with levels displayed vertically across both DS screens, and also 32 different types of enemy including the familiar skeletons and thieves but also a lot of new ones too.

Special abilities include Bait which attracts enemies away from players and the Glacier Freeze, will help with getting past the swaths of bad guys - newcomers will find them especially useful if the screens are going to be getting as packed as in previous Gauntlet games (which we're guessing they will be or the essence of the series will effectively be lost).

On top of the classic co-op multiplayer mode, Gauntlet on DS has a few other up its wizard's sleeve, too, including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Treasure Horde modes. We're also promised the original orchestral music which should stir up feelings of nostalgia in many an ageing gamer (we're including ourselves in that lot). We're just hoping the comedy in-game commentator makes a return to mock our gaming abilities - we don't think anyone in their right mind would ever tire of hearing "Blue Warrior shot the potion".

No release date has been announced for the game yet but we'll obviously let you know as soon as there is one.
