Even before Facebook made its move in the HTML5 app arena, US social mobile platform MocoSpace was already pushing the tech, courting developers to adopt its browser-based platform for iOS and Android.

Its latest move sees UK social mobile Tagplay making the leap from the App Store, launching a fresh HTML5-based version of theme park management sim Funpark Friends less than a month after it hit iPhone.

The fresh version retains the "core functionality" of the iOS release, claims Tagplay, but also looks to exploit MocoSpace's social and billing APIs.

Winning with the web

"The launch of Funpark Friends with MocoSpace is an important step as we seek to ramp up our support for mobile web browsers using the HTML5 platform," asaid Tagplay CEO Paul Farley.

Indeed, so consummate is this browser-based version, the original iPhone release is now being billed as an experiment, with Tagplay dubbing the iOS version as a 'soft launch' in preparation for its MocoSpace debut.

"We believe HTML5 will underpin an exciting period of even great growth for mobile gaming, giving players the choice of weather to play natively or on the web," Farley added.

In the firm's words, Tagplay sees the "rapid development of HTML5" as a genuine alternative to traditional download-based app marketplaces, with MocoSpace set to form a "core component of Tagplay's future publishing strategy".

The studio also plans to launch native versions of Funpark Friends on iPad and Android before the end of 2011.
