We’ve recently seen Square Enix’s classic RPG, Final Fantasy, making quite a splash on iPhone. Now, thanks to a licensing deal with Namco Networks, the game that spawned more than a dozen sequels and even more improbably spiky haircuts has made its way to mobile.

Well, US mobiles at least. If you live in the home of the brave, you’ll be able to download a copy right now, with your Canadian cousins set to join you shortly.

Final Fantasy casts you as a powerful group called the Warriors of Light, who must restore light to the four elemental crystals and save the world. You do this by traversing a huge world, travelling by land, sea and air and entering hundreds of strategic turn-based battles.

“Our goal for Final Fantasy was to enrich the user experience by bringing the true definition of RPGs to handhelds” said Scott Rubin, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Namco Networks.

Square Enix, meanwhile, is also rather chuffed at signing the deal to bring one of its defining franchises to a new audience. Interestingly, the company has hinted at additional games heading over to mobile as part of the deal with Namco.

Final Fantasy revolutionized the RPG genre in video games and we are thrilled to work with Namco Networks to bring this dynasty to mobile phones in North America,” says Takuya Okada of Square Enix. “Our partnership extends beyond Final Fantasy and we look forward to releasing additional games in the future.”

We’d bet on Final Fantasy II making its way over soon, but Okada's comments suggest that more Square franchises could be making the hop to mobile. Watch this space for more news on this, as well as when we can expect to see Final Fantasy on UK and European phones.
