No matter which side of the divide you sit on, there's no denying that in-app purchases are a controversial - and established - part of mobile gaming.

Subatomic Studios avoided IAPs altogether in Fieldrunners 2, which was impressive given that it introduced a new currency system for the Pocket Gamer Silver Award-winning tower defence title but didn't try to make money off of it.

Now, at the request of fans, Subatomic will bring IAPs to Fieldrunners 2 in the upcoming version 1.2 update that should be available for download by October 26th.

Pay on the run

In our review of Fieldrunners 2, we found the addition of the virtual currency to be a largely welcome change that made the game's punishing Tough difficulty mode a little more manageable.

Many fans also saw virtual currency as a welcome addition, but wished that it was easier to earn. After the 1.2 update these fans will be able to purchase stacks of coins as IAPs and fast-track their progress in the game.

In a post on the Subatomic Studios website, the developer reassured its fans of Fieldrunners 2 that the game structure itself would remain unaltered after the release of in-app purchases.

Summarizing its decision neatly, Subatomic closed out its post with the following statement, "… the game will continue to play and feel exactly as it always has (no added need to purchase coins), except that gamers inclined to purchase coins can now do this."
