Top 5 best games to take advantage of your new Nexus 5
|

Google has finally launched its new flagship phone, the Nexus 5. We've just received ours, and are enjoying getting to grips with its 5-inch loveliness.

It's looking pretty tasty, with a large 1080p display, a powerful Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.28GHz, and the brand-new Android 4.4 (KitKat) OS on board.

But the most impressive thing about the Google Nexus 5? Its price.

A phone with all this high-end tech in it would typically set you back upwards of £500 if it had Samsung or HTC branding. Here, though, you're paying just £299.

Put simply, the Nexus 5 is one of the most affordable ways of getting into high-end gaming - possibly behind only the Google Nexus 7.

So, if you were one of the lucky ones to have got your hands on a Nexus 5, what games should you be playing to take advantage of its impressive hardware? Try these for starters.

Real Racing 3
By Firemonkeys - buy on Android

The latest Real Racing game probably isn't the best in the series - on account of that pesky freemium structure - but it is undoubtedly the best looking. This means it's inevitably one of the ultimate showcase games for any new smartphone or tablet.

Given the Nexus 5's range-topping Snapdragon 800 CPU and super-sharp display, Google's flagship blower should be able to wring every last drop out of this impressive console-esque racing sim.

Dead Trigger 2
By Madfinger Games - buy on Android

Madfinger doesn't just make big dumb action games. It makes big dumb and PRETTY action games. And they don't come any prettier than Dead Trigger 2.

As well as Dead Trigger 2 being an excellent 3D graphics tester for your Nexus 5, its FPS gameplay should be well suited to that 1080p 5-inch display.

You might actually be able to see most of the zombie apocalypse unfolding on screen as you frantically rub and tap away with both thumbs.

The Room
By Fireproof Games - buy on Android

The Room is an excellent game with which to show off your Google Nexus 5. It looks absolutely amazing, with hyper-detailed 3D graphics in a rich world filled with arcane contraptions.

It's also eminently playable on your Nexus 5 despite the fact that it was designed primarily with tablets in mind. That's thanks to that large high-resolution screen.

Wild Blood
By Gameloft - buy on Android

Okay, so Wild Blood isn't the greatest game on the Google Play Store. But it is an entertaining enough hack 'n' slasher, and it has an enjoyable multiplayer mode. But that's almost besides the point.

Wild Blood makes it onto this list because it's the first (and thus far only) Gameloft game to be built using the Unreal Engine.

Yes, that's the same Unreal Engine that powers many of the top console games of this generation, not to mention Infinity Blade on iOS. It's the perfect technical showcase for your Nexus 5, in other words.

Kingdom Rush: Frontiers
By Ironhide Game Studios - buy on Android

Yes! Another chance to declare my love for Kingdom Rush! But Ironhide's ace tower defence game (or in this case, its sequel) hasn't just been shoehorned into this list. Oh, no.

Y'see, we could have picked from plenty of lush 3D action games, but we figure there are plenty of those above already.

Rather, Kingdom Rush: Frontiers is the kind of game that's typically more 'at home' on tablets, with its tricky mixture of detailed 2D graphics and zoomed-out gameplay. It still is, sure. But on the stunning Google Nexus 5 screen, it's beautifully playable.

Jon is a consummate expert in adventure, action, and sports games. Which is just as well, as in real life he's timid, lazy, and unfit. It's amazing how these things even themselves out.
