Top 20 best games you can download over 3G for your iPhone or iPad
|
iOS

So, you're sat at a bus stop. The bus that was supposed to arrive 20 minutes ago still hasn't turned up. You're cold, you're late, and - naturally - you're bored.

What do you do?

That's right: you fire up the App Store on your iPhone or iPad and splash a little cash on some nifty apps and games that will stave off your boredom.

Unfortunately, you can only download apps from the App Store that are smaller than 50MB over 3G, which - in an age where apps are getting increasingly bigger - doesn't leave you with much choice.

Fear not, bored souls: here are 20 of our favourite sub-50MB games.

They Need To Be Fed
(26.9MB)
By Bit Ate Bit - buy for iPhone and iPad

This 360-degree gravity-infused platformer is fun and frustrating in equal measure.

In it, you're tasked with navigating floating levels; collecting crystals and beans; and jumping into the gobs of hungry plant-like creatures.

League of Evil (12.8MB)
By Ravenous Games - buy for iPhone and iPad

League of Evil may be older than your mum, but it's still one of the best platform games on the App Store. Its bite-sized levels are perfect for quick gaming sessions, too.

In this platformer, you have to navigate stages filled with traps and enemies, and use your trusty fist to smash evil scientists in the chops.

Edge Extended
(20.2MB)
By Mobigame - buy for iPhone and iPad

A pretty simple and simply pretty puzzle game in which you guide a cube around hazards and obstacles en route to the exit of various isometric mazes.

These perils include moving blocks that hurl your cube into the abyss, and disappearing platforms that, well, hurl your cube into the abyss.

Clash of Clans (45.7MB)
By Supercell - download for iPhone and iPad

This free-to-play build-'em-up centres on building, maintaining, and expanding a small fantasy village filled with homes, mines, and various defences.

You can't just sit around waiting for attacks, mind. You have to set off on adventures in search of enemy settlements to destroy.

New Star Soccer (21.2MB)
By New Star Games - download for iPhone and iPad

In New Star Games's ridiculously addictive soccer sim, you step into the footy boots of a lowly amateur player, and work your way into the line-up of some of the world's best teams.

In the words of the immortal George Best, you can then spend the big wages you eventually earn on "booze, birds, and fast cars". The rest you can just squander.

Score! World Goals
(45.3MB)
By First Touch Games - download for iPhone and iPad

In Score! World Goals, you are invited to recreate more than 300 memorable goals from some of the best-ever real-world domestic, European, and international foot-to-ball matches.

1001 Attempts (7.1MB)
By CookieBit - buy for iPhone and iPad

If you have a deep-seated hatred of the words 'one more try', you'll absolutely detest 1001 Attempts.

It's almost impossible not to utter those infamous words as you - once again - fail to dodge explosive missiles, shirk flying saw blades, and keep clear of dangerous laser beams.

Punch Quest (14.1MB)
By Madgarden / RocketCat Games - download for iPhone and iPad

In most endless-running games, you have to dodge enemies, avoid obstacles, and stay out of the way of hazards.

In Punch Quest, however, you have to uppercut, slam, and generally pummel your way through anything that stands in your path.

Random Heroes (11.7MB)
By Ravenous Games - buy for iPhone and iPad

Become a hero and save the world from the alien baddies who are trying to destroy it.

That's your mission in this action-packed side-scrolling platformer.

There are a whopping 24 characters from which to choose in Random Heroes, and 17 different weapons with which to equip them.

Hypership Out of Control (10.2MB)
By Fun Infused Games - buy for iPhone and iPad

Your ship's accelerator is stuck to the floor. Your ship's brakes - conveniently - don't work.

Your aim in this "tremendous" port, then, is simply to survive.

Colourful asteroids, floating blocks, and space mines make this goal a lot harder to accomplish than it has any right to be.

Game Dev Story
(8.7MB)
By Kairosoft - buy for iPhone

Game Dev Story is a game all about other video games.

In this business-management sim, you're in charge of hiring and firing developers and other staff; purchasing console licences; and propelling your studio to stardom by releasing a string of successful games video games.

Good luck, soldier.

The Blockheads (30.4MB)
By Majic Jungle Software - download for iPhone and iPad

There are a few 2D Minecraft-esque build-'em-ups on the App Store, but The Blockheads is by far the best of the bunch.

You know the drill: explore a randomly generated world, mine for essential supplies, and craft almost anything your imagination can conjure up.

Angry Birds Star Wars (38.6MB)
By Rovio - buy for iPhone or buy for iPad

Like in previous Angry Birds titles, your aim in Angry Birds Star Wars is to catapult miffed avians at waves of egg-snatching pigs.

In this excellent spin-off, however, your birdies all have lightsabers and Force powers. How cool is that?

Magnetic Billiards: Blueprint (46.3MB)
By Zee-3 - buy for iPhone and iPad

Magnetic Billiards: Blueprint is an excellent pool-esque puzzle game played on pocketless tables with various coloured balls.

The objective is to rack up as many points as you can by combining similarly coloured balls in as many - yes, that's as MANY - moves as possible.

Jetpack Joyride (21.3MB)
By Halfbrick - download for iPhone and iPad

Jetpack Joyride is a typical endless-flying game insomuch as you have to complete missions, collect coins, and - of course, avoid obstacles.

These obstacles range from lasers and electricity fields, to guided rockets that are a right royal pain in the backside.

Fruit Ninja (41.8MB)
By Halfbrick - buy for iPhone or buy for iPad

Frantically slash at your device's screen in order to slice and dice a variety of juicy fruits into small pieces.

Accidentally touch one of the bombs that randomly appear on-screen or allow three pieces of fruit to touch the 'floor', and it's Game Over.

Flick Kick Football
(42.7MB)
By PikPok Games - buy for iPhone and iPad

In Flick Kick Football, you literally flick (using a grubby finger of your choice) a football around defenders, past a goalkeeper, and into the back of a net.

You do this across multiple game modes, which include a Time Attack mode and a Bullseye mode.

Ridiculous Fishing (46.1MB)
By Vlambeer / aeiowu - buy for iPhone and iPad

Traditional fishing with a rod too boring for you? If so, try Vlambeer and aeiowu's Ridiculous Fishing.

In this PETA-baiting fishing title, you are encouraged to catch fish with shotguns, machine guns, pistols, and a whole boatload of explosives.

Dark Nebula - Episode One (26.1MB)
By 1337 Design Games - buy for iPhone

Released all the way back in 2009, Dark Nebula - Episode One is still one of my favourite iOS games.

In it, you're tasked with rolling a ball around several hazard-filled arenas.

Be sure to download sequel Dark Nebula - Episode Two when you eventually find a wi-fi connection, too.

Super Crate Box
(14.9MB)
By Halfbot - buy for iPhone and iPad

Like a lot of games on this rundown, Super Crate Box is perfect for bite-sized chunks of gaming.

Your aim in this fast-paced title is to traverse a series of single-screen arenas, collecting crates and blasting endless waves of enemies along the way.

Anthony Usher
Anthony Usher
Anthony is a Liverpool, UK-based writer who fell in love with gaming while playing Super Mario World on his SNES back in the early '90s.
