The App Stork: Introducing Protoxide Racing, Doodle Flight, Quiz Game Land...
|

Thirteen new games! And that's just the ones released this week. Over the last seven days, the iPhone and iPod touch developer news section of the iPhone forums has been busier than ever, with plenty of older games attracting fresh attention, too.

It's getting harder and harder to pick the top three, so don't be disheartened if you are a developer and your game hasn't been featured.

And, as usual, if you are a gamer and have come across a new favourite via the App Stork, do drop by to let the developers know - they'll appreciate it, and so will we. And now, for this week's bundles of joy...

Protoxide Racing - HeroCraft

The only way to make insanely fast anti-gravity racing vehicles any cooler is to adorn them with enough weaponry to take on an army of cloned Rambos. Protoxide Racing doubles up on the artillery for a racer that looks as frantic as it is fast, and that’s a good thing in our book.

It’s hard to construct a game in this mould without borrowing heavily from WipEout, but HeroCraft’s effort definitely has its own curious relationship with breaking the known laws of physics, and we can’t wait to play it. It’s not out yet, but this video below should set your heart aflutter in the meantime.

Doodle Flight - j2sighte
The title suggests a game somewhat like another popular iPhone game with ‘Flight’ in the title (hint: it also has the word ‘Control’ in the title) but Doodle Flight is entirely its own proposition. Or rather, it’s Space Invaders with drawing.

Taking shape as a bottom-to-top scrolling shooter, with neat doodle-like graphics, you have to battle your way past hordes of enemies and regular bosses. The twist is that you can create your own ship to pilot, drawing your design on the touchscreen before the game starts, which is a neat idea. Cute, creative and cheap at 59p - go and grab it.

Quiz Game Land - Undercoders
This has taken us completely by surprise. Why has it taken so long for a gaming trivia quiz game to arrive on any platform (or are we missing something)? Quiz Game Land features Trivia Pursuit-esque gameplay, only, there are no questions about Bhutanese politics and the presentation is fun, self-referential and quirky.

There are mini-games thrown in among the questions to keep things clicking along too and there are 57 enemies to discover and collect in exchange for answering questions correctly. Chuck in an online leaderboard, an original story and soundtrack, and the £1.19 price tag seems entirely justified.

Someone should have thought of this sooner - get it while it’s hot.
