Five mobile quiz games that will press your buzzer
|

It's a terrible thing, when you're in on a Saturday night, screaming foam-flecked abuse at your television because some eejit doesn't know the name of the largest river in Nottinghamshire. (Or is that just us?)

TV gameshows are truly interactive TV, in that everyone watching thinks they know the answers to every question, and are quite prepared to shout them. So can you ever recreate that experience on a mobile phone?

Well, mobile games publishers are certainly trying. And not just with TV quizzers either – trivia fiends have a wide selection of games to play on their phones. Here's five worth checking out.

1. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
Published by Glu Mobile, this is still the gold standard for transferring a TV game-show to mobile. All that's missing is Chris Tarrant's gurning (thankfully) – in all other respects, this is the full WWTBAM experience. Answer a series of questions, and use your three lifelines when you get stuck. Obviously, there isn't the same nailbiting tension – when you lose you can simply have another go. But still, it's gripping fun, and has since been followed by a sequel, and a music-themed edition.

2. Trivial Pursuit: 20th Anniversary Edition
Relive those childhood Christmas' where the family gathered round the table to fight over a set of plastic cheeses. Released to celebrate two decades of the board game, this polished mobile version is a blast from start to finish, whether you play it in single-player Time Attack mode or pass-the-handset multiplayer Classic mode. It might give a bit too much help to weaker players, but it's a must-have if you love the board game. Plus there are zillions of themed versions available on mobile too.

3. Strike It Lucky
Awwwight at the back? At the front? In that last gasp reality TV show? Strike It Lucky brings the classic Michael Barrymore game show to mobile, although not with the presenter himself – a running theme in this genre. However it does have the cheesy theme tune, slightly rubbish prizes and follows the format of the original. And it works marvellously as a multiplayer game, with you fulfilling the Barrymore role of chatting up old ladies while your partner hits all the hotspots. At least, that's how we play it...

4. Deal Or No Deal
Gameloft must've used dark magic to secure the rights to Noel Edmonds – he actually appears in this mobile version of the barnstorming TV series. It's a slick translation too, ramping up the tension as you open red boxes in an effort to trouser the maximum possible cash while outsmarting the mysterious banker. Fans will be disappointed that it doesn't follow the show's formula completely (once you deal, you go straight to the bit where you open the final box), but otherwise this is a good way to get your Edmonds fix while on the go.

5. The Weakest Link 2nd Edition
Anne Robinson's thunder may have been stolen by Noel's Deal Or No Deal – we think she jumped the shark around the time Botox stopped her being able to smile without the aid of a couple of crocodile clips. But she's still going strong on mobile, with this second incarnation of The Weakest Link. Not that she appears in the game, you understand. It's simple to play, although a bit on the tough side – if you get more than a couple of wrong answers in a round, you're scuppered. But if you're a fan of the world's nastiest quizzer, it's worth a look.
