Fatal Fury hits mobiles

New lease of life for ancient fighter on its fifteen year anniversary

Fatal Fury hits mobiles

If you old enough to remember Fatal Fury in the arcades, you'll probably have to ask your son how to download it onto your handset. Who said nostalgia was painless?

Based on the Fatal Fury 2 coin-op, the publisher, Hudson Soft, is creating both Java and BREW versions of the game, which it plans to release in the US in the autumn. There's no indication of a European release date yet.

The game will feature eight characters from Fatal Fury 2, each with their own special moves. We're told combos and patterns of attack have been tweaked for fighting on a mobile handset without abandoning the inherent depth of gameplay.

Eight unique locations are promised, each with parallax scrolling backgrounds. Play modes will include Quick Play, Single Match, Training, Survival, and a story-based Tournament mode.

The Fatal Fury franchise was originally developed by SNK for the Neo-Geo system. It featured a variety of combatants fighting in a 2D background, taking each other on with deadly combos and finishing moves.

While the first game launched 15 years ago, it wasn't until Fatal Fury 2 that the series hit its stride. Since then, more than 11 versions of the game have been released on various platforms.
