About two years after its original launch, the mobile anime strategy game Disgaea RPG is set to end support for the English version of the game. Come May 12th, players will be entirely unable to log into their accounts, and on the 19th of April, they will no longer be able to make any in-app purchases as content production for the game ramps down until the closure.

Disgaea RPG closing down is a bit of a shock given that it’s based on one of the bigger names within cult classic JRPG circles. The series has been ongoing for quite some time, with the 7th entry due out later this year, and it has seen a ton of love both in the East and West alike. Unfortunately, it seems the mobile rendition wasn’t meant to keep up this success.

The announcement is, as expected from closure announcements when it comes to mobile games, vague about what exactly could have caused this shutdown. Given that only the English side of the game is closing, it might be telling us that Disgaea RPG just didn’t see enough success within the Western markets to make up for the cost of keeping it supported and alive.

Still, it is a bummer to see the fanservice-filled mobile entry into the series close its doors on us. Fortunately, mobile devices won’t be entirely without Disgaea gameplay, as other entries within the series are still available as fully single-player experiences, meaning there’s no chance of a shutdown taking away years of progress like there is with live service games such as Disgaea RPG.

So, while it’s sad to see Disgaea RPG go, there is at least one silver lining. In the meantime, you do have some time before the game shuts down for good, so why not download it for free at either of the links below and check it out?
