Crossy Road is one of the more popular mobile games in recent years. The game was so popular, that there was an in-universe follow-up called Crossy Road Castle by the folks at Hipster Whale. As a matter of fact, Crossy Road Castle was one of my top five mobile games of the year for 2020.

The original game, Crossy Road is where it all began. It's essentially like what the name says that it is. You choose from a cast of silly characters and you try to cross different roads. Sound familiar? That's because of its clear inspiration from the legendary Frogger games.

The game is simple, but is quite addictive, which is an obvious reason why it was such a hit on mobile. Even with the release of Crossy Road Castle, the OG game is still popular and highly regarded. Here are a few things you should know about this road crossing survival game.

It's a Lot Like Frogger

We kind of eluded to this already, but Crossy Road is a bit like Frogger. You play as one of several different characters. Your goal is to get cross as many streets as possible. These characters are funny and adorable block-like animals (and some humans).

As you progress, you'll unlock new characters to play with. So it makes the game a pretty rewarding experience as new characters will give you a fresh perspective. It also adds to the hilarity of the game as well as you see the characters hop across the streets and avoid vehicles.

Its familiarity may be a big reason why it's such a popular game. And for many gamers who never had the chance to experience the joy of Frogger, this is a great way to jump on board. It brings the classic elements of the old arcade game and makes it more advanced and is fitting for the mobile platform.

Pick Up and Play Simplicity

Mobile features a massive amount of games. Many of these you can just pick up, play, and enjoy instantly. and Crossy Road is one of them. As we mentioned a bit earlier, its Frogger nature is as simple a concept as they come for a mobile game.

The concept makes it easy to pick up and play. With that said, it also offers a bit of challenge as well, which ends up making it addicting. You'll play and might fail early on, but it will just make you eager to go for another go until you get your best score yet.

Its fun and simple design are pretty easy on the eyes, just for the record. It's modern graphically while also being arcade-like a the same time. Mobile gamers of all kinds may appreciate the game's blend of simplicity, challenge, and quirky design overall.

Fun Rewards

One of the signature features of Crossy Road is the rewards that you can earn when playing. The biggest thing is the ability to unlock some fun new characters. Although the game has been around for a little while now, it's still getting updated with new additions.

So how do you unlock the characters for your street-crossing adventures? Well, when playing, you'll come across floating coins. Grab these and try to rack up as many as you can. Once you have enough, you'll be able to put your coins into a dispenser where you'll unlock a random character.

It's almost like cracking open a pack of trading cards in hope of getting a cool, rare card. This is one thing that makes the game addicting. You'll be trying to really earn as many characters as you can. These can be animals, humans, or other things and they are broken up into separate categories such as sports figures and country-based characters. Happy collecting.
