In an effort to further push road safety messages to today's disenchanted youth (as opposed to yesterday's disenchanted youth - you and me - who now stay at home with a nice cup of tea instead of going out racing around the ring road), Australian Victoria Roads is preparing a free iPhone racer called CityGT.

The Sydney Morning Herald explains that the game plays pretty much like any other iPhone racer, except this one has road signs, speed limits and billboards littering the road side with messages about the dangers of drink driving.

The primary purpose behind this ironic game is to raise awareness among Australian's young drivers of the dangers of using a mobile phone when driving.

A phone will ring as you race (or drive sensibly) around the streets of CityGT, and answering it results in a spectacular crash.

The game is already available in the Australian App Store, though whether it'll be rolled out to other territories where phoning and texting while driving are also an increasing problem remains to be seen.
