Super popular German boardgame Carcassonne finally has an official iPhone game to its name, developed by The Coding Monkeys and with support from the tabletop game's publisher, Hans im Glück.

The game has you laying out wooden follower pieces (called 'meeples', trivia fans) to gain a regal monopoly on a patch of countryside. It's all turn based, so if you're playing with pals, you can play at your own pace and make your next move after receiving a push notification.

You can also play in local multiplayer over wi-fi and Bluetooth, or just play alone with eight AI opponents. You've also got fully voiced tutorials, a comprehensive manual, a 'Solitaire' mode, online and offline ranking and chat functionality when playing with friends.

We know what you're thinking: 'What about the Handler und Baumeister expansion pack that gives me a pig follower?' The team does plan to add expansion packs as in-app purchases eventually. The current game just features the base 2000 boardgame.

And as for iPad, it's coming. It will be a universal application, but get in quick because the updated game will sharply rise to $10 for the privilege. The update is expected later this year.

Carcassonne is available now for iPhone and iPod touch for £2.99 / $4.99 / €3.99.
