2010 seems to be a year for strange iPhone games. We've already had cannons and llama-shaving in Fleeced!, video explanations of how you can use Q?pid for light petting, and are looking forward to tap dancing in dog poo in Buzz Off.

Battle of Puppets is certainly up there on the bonkers meter too.

The normal bit is that it's a castle versus castle defence game using a beautiful Paper Mario cum pop-up book art style, in which you have to select and send your troops across the screen to destroy your opponent's castle.

You also have the option to used gesture-based abilities, and upgrade your buildings and outputs.

The wacky bit is that the armies you can select are based around famous operas - Carmen, Aida, Valkyrie and Salome. In this way, your units are related to the specific opera so in Carmen you can use bulls, Aida has Egyptian-themed warriors, and in Valkyrie the figures are Norse-themed.

And even stranger, you fight across 22 US cities such as Las Vegas, Dodge City, Dallas and San Francisco, each of which has its own characteristic landmarks.

But as you can see from the video below, it's the awesome artwork that really makes the game stand out. Let's hope Spanish studio Small Wonders has managed similar feats when it comes to the gameplay.
