Bad North: Jotunn Edition has finally landed on mobile devices through the App Store and Google Play Store, and we couldn't be happier.
The unique blend of miniature real-time strategy and roguelike elements, all wrapped up in an adorable and charming Nordic flavor means it ticks a lot of boxes for me, and it's the kind of game we could put hours into. And I'm sure you will too.
But just like any roguelike adventure, you will want to go in armed with all of the knowledge you need. That's exactly why I've written up the tips you will need in order to go into battle prepared.
Just like any roguelike game, you're not actually likely to get far on your first attempt, but try and try again, and you will quickly discover that this is an engaging experience that you won't be able to get enough of.One voyage, make it count
So yes, this is a roguelike game, and that means once you're done, you're done, and you will have to start from the beginning. Not only that but even if you win the battles ahead, you might lose your unit formations. Once your units die, they're not coming back in that playthrough.
This means you will have to keep several things in mind. The first is that you will need to ensure that your full team survives each game - and to this end, you do have the option to replay levels, which makes things much easier if you refuse to go on your journey without a full team.
But in general, you'll want to ensure each formation survives, even if it's just a single unit, because if you lose a formation that you spent cash upgrading, then you will be up against some very tough battles ahead. It really needs a cautious hand when directing your units around the stage.
Strength in numbers
Yes, believe it or not, enemies will die faster if you have multiple units on them, and your units will spend less time risking their own health when they have backup.
It's a simple rule, but in the early game you'll want to be directing all of your units around the stage to stand by one another as waves of enemies invade - leaving any ally by themselves can be a risky situation.
Once you get different classes, archers are good to have behind your main melee squad to do early damage to any invading enemies.
Classes and skills
Right, that brings us onto classes. You will be able to choose from several classes, some of which are better at range or standing still, and each will have their own specific uses.
As mentioned, archers are useful to back up other units, but melee should still be your first defence.
Some melee units have higher defence, but can't fight well while on the move, so should be placed where enemies will appear in advance.
After a while enemies will start coming in armed with bows and shields, making it much tougher to take them down. But by this point, you should also be prepared with a full team of a class-using units, and skills.
Keep in mind the skills your units earn, for some of them will require specific placement to use, and will make these tougher enemies much easier to deal with.
If you use classes correctly, and never go into battles alone, you should be able to easily come out on top in the end.
