Thunberbox Entertainment has finally launched The Captain is Dead for iOS, Android and Steam after it was announced in August 2019. We've followed its progress here on Pocket Gamer having covered the game during both of LaunchPad events.

If you're unfamiliar, it's an adaptation of the board game of the same name that looks to bring the survival-strategy experience to the digital realm. It takes place in the depths of space and you'll have to take charge of your crew following the death of your captain.

Each member of the crew will bring a unique set of skills to the table. Whether that's the Ensign, Crewman or the Admiral, everyone has something to offer that you will need to make tactical use of to ensure you make it out alive.

You won't have to make all of these important decisions by yourself, however, since the ship's onboard AI is on-hand to provide you with useful tips. Still, it won't be an easy task. Alongside managing your crew you'll need to upgrade your ship, deal with hostile aliens and tend to your wounded among other mishaps. It sounds like it could get very hectic.

The game sports a colourful lo-fi aesthetic which you can check out in the embedded trailer above. It also features the vocal talents of Kevan Brighting (The Stanley Parable, Void Bastards, Portal) and Elias Toufexis (Star Trek Discovery, The Expanse, Deus Ex) whilst the synthwave soundtrack has been provided by producer Occams Laser.

The Captain is Dead is available now over on the App Store, Google Play and Steam. It's a premium title that costs around $8.99 on mobile and $15 on PC.
