War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is the spiritual successor to Final Fantasy Tactics

Originally announced back in December, Square Enix's War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is a Final Fantasy Tactics-style RPG that's due to release later this year for iOS and Android. The game uses gacha mechanics, though the official line is that they're actually summon mechanics – the difference isn't particularly clear at the moment.

Brave Exvius takes place in the world of Lapis on the continent known as Adler. The locals there have passed around stories of legendary crystals since ye olde times, and, as it turns out, those tall tales might actually have been fairly accurate.

The combat will be largely familiar to tactics fans, with battles taking place on a 3D, multi-layered field. It's looking to draw in both advanced tactics players and beginners by offering up an "auto mode" as well as a "high-speed mode".

Every playable character has their own unique abilities for you to use strategically, and, in true Final Fantasy fashion, activating your limit burst will result in an explosion of satisfying effects. There's also a job system here, much like in the earlier games; and all story quests are actually fully voiced for complete immersion. On top of the main campaign, you'll also have event quests and world quests to tackle for high-end loot.

While we don't yet have a firm release date for this one, Japanese players have had the option to pre-register for some time now. You can see several of the pre-registration goals, including exclusive heroes and unit characters, over on the game's official site, though obviously none of text is in English.

It's probably safe to assume western audiences will see this one by the end of the year, so here's to hoping we don't have too long to wait to see what will hopefully be a decent successor to the likes of Final Fantasy Tactics.
