Japanese studio Acquire is best known for console games like Tenchu and Way of the Samurai. But it's now got a free mobile game on iOS and Android, called Fort Raiders SMAAASH!

It's inspired by Clash of Clans, but instead of building a village, you construct a side-scrolling fort out of blocks.

This custom-made castle serves as your base of operations and is where you garner resources and hire troops. You'll also want to defend it against any would-be invaders with turrets and guards.

When you're ready you can go take on the fortresses of other players, and try to demolish them. You'll earn resources and materials which you can use to upgrade your own base.

The game is free to play and has the usual IAPs. I'm quite intrigued by this one: I'm so completely bored by Clash clones, but this one offers something different and looks to put a focus on customisation and level design. You in?
